Do you have to have PC-Travel for Windows to use GPSLT? Yes. GPS2LT only collects the travel time data. You need PC-Travel to process, analyze, and
generate the reports. Most users will have PC-Travel on the laptop as well as GPS2LT so it is a simple matter to process the data.
What laptops are supported? Almost any will work just fine. The program doesn’t require much processing power, so if you have an old laptop that
you don’t use much anymore, it will probably work just fine. The laptop should run Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, or XP.
What GPS receivers are supported? There are hundreds of GPS receivers available on the marketplace. Some will work with our products and some
won’t. A complete discussion of this will be posted on this site, along with a list of GPS receivers that we know do or do not work. In general, a GPS receiver needs the following features:
- Serial Interface using standard protocols (NMEA text sentences).
- Data output once per second.
- External antenna to mount on top of car (not absolutely needed, but very helpful).
We have tested many different GPS receivers. At the moment we like the Garmin 35 and the Holux 120. Each of these cost less than $200 and are readily available via the internet.
Will Jamar sell GPS receivers? We’d rather not, primarily from a service point of view. However, we can put together quotes that includes GPS
receivers if that is more convenient for you.
My new laptop doesn’t have a serial port. What do I do?
This is becoming a very common problem. Fortunately there is a simple solution.
Pictured here is a typical USB To Serial adapter. The USB connector plugs into the USB port on your laptop. The serial device, in this case the GPS receiver,
plugs into the serial connector on the other end of the cable. You can get these adapters at most computer stores and office supply stores. Radio Shack also sells
them. Click on the image to go to a site that sells several different versions.
