One small problem with GPS2LT is that it can be a little
difficult to operate the keys while collecting the data. You can use the Spacebar key for marking nodes, which is pretty easy, but you need to hit specific keys to start/stop runs or end the program.
Here is a solution to this problem that costs less than $50. It is a remote control that normally is used with Microsoft Powerpoint presentations so the presenter can move around
while doing the presentation.
As you can see in this photo, it is small (you can see the dime used to show the size) and simple to use. There are four buttons on the remote; we use the Left Arrow button for
Start/Stop Run, the Right Arrow button for New Node, and the bottom button (with the square thingy) to end the study.
You plug the receiver (the thing on the left that looks like a stick of gum) into the USB port of your laptop. The laptop
configures itself automatically. You do need a version of Windows that supports USB ports; Windows XP, 2000, ME, and 98 (basically anything newer than Windows 95). If your laptop has a USB connector on it then it probably will work.
The remote communicates with the receiver with RF so you don’t have to worry about pointing the remote at the receiver.
There is a setting in the GPS2LT Preferences screen to tell the software you are using the remote. All of the normal
keyboard commands still work, this setting just tells the software to also look for the commands coming from the romote interface.
Here is a site where you can get some information about this remote. Remember, it is designed for presentations, not data
collection.
Here is one source where you can buy this remote for onlyl $42 (last time we checked). Jamar will also sell these with
GPS2LT as an optional accessory (but probably for more than $42 (hint)).
