Palm III

This is an old Palm model that isn’t in production anymore. But you may have one in a drawer somewhere. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work with GPS2PDA.

It seems it is just a little too slow to keep up with the data coming from GPS receivers. We have one of these PDAs and at first we thought it would work ok. But the more we tested it the more problems we had. Finally we had to conclude that it just isn’t fast enough.

If you have one, you may want to try it out before you invest in a new PDA. We only have the one and maybe there is something wrong with ours.

With that warning, here is more information about this PDA.

It has a monochrome screen which can be a little difficult to read in low light situations, but generally it works ok in a typical car.

You need a serial cable to connect the Palm III to the GPS receiver. You may have a serial Hotsync cable that came with the Palm III that looks like the cable shown here; this will work. If you don’t have a cable you can order one on the internet at various sites. A favorite of ours is Markspace.com (click here).

The hotsync cable gets you halfway there. It is designed to connect to a computer, not to a device like a GPS receiver. You also need what is called a “null modem adapter” that does two things: it switches the pins on the cable so that the PDA can listen to the GPS receiver, and it changes the gender of the cable so it mates with the cable on the GPS. You can get these adapters at local computer stores, office supply stores, Radio Shacks, and of course, the internet. You want to find a 9 pin, male-to-male null modem adapter. You may only be able to find a 9 pin, male-to-female null modem adapter (that is what Radio Shack sells). You then need a 9 pin male-to -male gender changer to plug into the null modem adapter and change the output connector to a male type. These adapters are also easy to find in local stores (including Radio Shack). The parts are available from Radio Shack, the Male-to -Female Null Modem Adapter is part #26-264 and costs $6.99. The Male To Male Gender Changer is part # 26-231 and also costs $6.99.
