The Garmin 35PC is a very good receiver for either GPS2LT or GPS2PDA.
The picture here shows the module that goes on the roof. It has an optional magnetic mount (which you need) so it sticks to the roof. The cable goes through
the window into the car and divides into two cables; one goes to the laptop or PDA (it has a nine pin serial connector) and the other goes to the cigarette lighter in your car for power.
It has the required features we need for travel time studies; it mounts on the roof, it has a serial port to connect to the laptop or PDA, and it outputs NMEA
sentences at one second intervals. There also is a software utility to restrict the number of output sentences, which is needed if you use this receiver with an older Palm PDA running GPS2PDA.
The receiver is not WAAS enabled but we aren’t sure if that matters much for travel time studies.
There are different versions of the Garmin 35. You want the Garmin 35PC, which comes with the cables described above. You can get more information about the Garmin 35PC here.
One source to buy this receiver is Adventure GPS (click here). It sells for $189 plus $19 for the mount.
There really isn’t anything wrong with this receiver, except it isn’t quite as good as the Holux 210, which is cheaper, and supports WAAS correction. But if you can’t find a Holux 210 or you find one of these used or on EBay, then snap it up. It
really is a good GPS receiver.
