Haicom 204E

Haicom 204E(300)This receiver is now our favorite for GPS2LT and is part of our recommended system (click here). It has a nice set of features and a great price. It also seems to be in stock every time we need to buy one. One nice feature is the way the receiver is powered. Rather than use a cigarette lighter adapter (although this is an option if you prefer) the receiver has a cable that plugs into the mouse port on your laptop to get power. This makes the cabling a little neater; one cable goes to the mouse port and a second cable (that splits off of the main cable about a foot from the end) goes to the serial port on your laptop. This is a nice design feature.

It has the required features we need for travel time studies; it mounts on the roof (it comes standard with a magnetic mount), it has a serial port to connect to the laptop or PDA, and it outputs NMEA sentences at one second intervals. There also is a software utility to restrict the number of output sentences, which is needed if you use this receiver with an older Palm PDA running GPS2PDA.

The Haicom 204E is WAAS compatible, which is a nice feature even if we aren’t sure it is helpful for our particular application.

Here is a link where you can get more information and/or buy this receiver.
