Vortech ReRadiator

Vortec3 Re-Raditor kit(200)In order to get the best possible reception, the GPS receiver antenna should be outside your car, preferably on the roof. What if you have a nice GPS receiver now but it doesn’t have an external antenna? The answer is a reradiator kit. The picture here shows the unit we have tested. It has an external antenna that goes on the roof. The reradiator unit goes inside the car and gets power from a cigarette lighter adapter. The reradiator takes the signals received by the antenna on the roof and broadcasts them into the cab of the car, where your GPS receiver will have no trouble reading them.

The one we have works really well.

Here is a link to a site where you can get one of these. The last time we looked it only cost $90.

There are several scenarios where a reradiator could be very useful:

1) You have a standalone GPS receiver that would work with GPS2LT or GPS2PDA but either doesn’t have an external antenna option, or the external antenna costs more than $90.

2) You have a Pocket-PC PDA that doesn’t have a Compact Flash socket but does have an SDIO socket. You can get a Pharos SD GPS Receiver that plugs into the SDIO socket of your PDA and use the reradiator to get the GPS signals to the receiver. The main problem with the SDIO GPS receiver is the sensitivity; the small form factor makes it difficult to put in a decent antenna. The strong signal from the reradiator makes this problem moot.
