Recommended Systems

Ok, Ok, you don’t want to deal with all of this technical info. We understand. You just want us to tell you what to buy.

Here are a few complete systems we can suggest. They include everything you need. Yikes, what a grouch.

GPS2PDA Systems

The Make My Boss Happy System:

This is the lowest cost system we can recommend. It has a Palm m130 PDA and a Holux 210 GPS receiver connected together with a Palm Universal cable. This is all you need to collect great travel time data. The m130 gives very good performance but may be hard to find (eBay is your best bet. There are always a dozen or so available, usually for about $100). The Holux 210 has all of the features we need, and costs less than any we have found. This is a solid combination that will give you good results.

The Best GPS2PDA and TraxPDA Combo System:

If you are looking for multiple applications for your PDA and GPS receiver, and you are smart enough to have Jamar Trax road tube counters (or expect to in the near future) then you might want to consider a system that is a little more flexible then the minimum system shown above. The problem with that system is the GPS receiver is not convenient to use outside of your car. This combo system uses a Dell Axim X5 PDA with a Haicom 303E GPS receiver. For GPS2PDA you use the external antenna and for TraxPDA (or while hiking, camping, or fishing, not that you would ever use this equipment for personal use) you would use the antenna built into the module that plugs into the PDA. No extra cables are needed.

GPS2LT Systems

We will assume you have a laptop, or you can get one if you need to (try eBay, the prices are amazing) Remember, almost any laptop running Windows 95-XP will work just fine. That means you need a GPS receiver.

Holux GPS (200)02At the moment our favorite GPS receiver is the Holux 210, shown here. The basic kit comes with all of the cables and connectors you need. This receiver has the best set of features of any GPS receiver we’ve found so far, and it also is the least expensive. That’s a hard combination to beat. The basic model connects to your laptop using the USB port but they have models that use the older serial port connectors if you want to use an old laptop that doesn’t have a USB port.
